Oral allergy syndrome, also known as pollen–food allergy syndrome, is caused by cross-reacting allergens found in both pollen and raw fruits, vegetables, or some tree nuts. The immune system recognizes the pollen and similar proteins in the food and directs an allergic response to it.
If you feel like you’re always getting an itchy mouth after eating the same raw fruit or vegetable, it’s time to speak to an allergist. https://acaai.org/allergies/types/food-allergies/types-food-allergy/oral-allergy-syndrome
WHAT TRIGGERS POLLEN-FOOD ALLERGY?
Although not everyone with a pollen allergy experiences oral allergy syndrome when eating the following foods, they are commonly associated with these allergens:
- Birch pollen: apple, almond, carrot, celery, cherry, hazelnut, kiwi, peach, pear, plum
- Grass pollen: celery, melons, oranges, peaches, tomato
- Ragweed pollen: banana, cucumber, melons, sunflower seeds, zucchini
SYMPTOMS
- itchy mouth
- scratchy throat
- swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, and throat
- itchy ears
- hives on the mouth
COMPLICATIONS (if not treated early)
- scratchy throat
- coughing
- flu-like symptoms
- difficulty of breathing
In my case, I found out that I got this kind of allergy due to the symptoms recurring right after eating certain types of foods such as: eggplants, monggo beans, mango, non-scaly fishes, dried fish, egg and chicken.
Furthermore, I learnt that once I fail to take antihistamine once I’ve eaten these certain kind of foods, the symptoms aggraviate within a week or more. And until I won’t stop eating foods triggering my allergy, it’ll fall into flu-like symptoms as being enumerated on the list.
WITHOUT MY MEDICATION
Most of common symptoms I encounter would be itchy lips, mouth and throat within an hour or immediately right after ingesting certain foods. For the first 24 hours, a single break on my lip corner (either left/right) begins to irritate me and it feels like a burning sensation which is getting worse once soaked with water. My lips start to feel so dry and the wound/break gets thicker and and bleeds out with blood, though, seems so tiny yet the painful burning sensation gets worse everytime I move my lips while talking or when chewing. It gets worse and worse during the first week
I suffers on this for 1-2 weeks. When I stop eating the triggers and its almost dried up. The corner of my lips pigmentation darkens due to the scar.
TAKING MEDICATION
Yes. Since childhood, I were diagnosed by several Dermatologists that I have allergy to certain foods, that’s when I started maintenance medicines such as antihistamines which could cause to to fall down into a sleep once I take them. Most of the time, it could last for 24 hours until the drowsy effect will go away.
There come a time when I got this systemic Dermatitis on may soles and palms and back (I forgot how they call it). I sufferred for almost 3 months, eating fresh tomato, rice, salt and milk and water. Nothing else more. I did it so because that allergy I had was like a burning lips yet it covers almost the entire part of my both palms and soles and it is al over my creases. I was crying every night then and my father came to a point where he even blamed it to witchcrafts. But my mom didn’t believed on such thing neither that’s why she persuaded us to consult the Licensed Dermatologist specialized in allergies.
Since antihistamines don’t work at all during that crisis of mine, they prescribed me corticosteroids such as topical creams and maintenance tablets for a duration of 4 weeks then went for a follow up check up to see if the results are fine.
And it did. The results gone far good and great.
